A flower field family session

There’s something magical about a flower field in full bloom — the colors, the sunshine, the gentle breeze — and when you pair that with the warmth of a loving family, it becomes a perfect recipe for timeless memories.

Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing a wonderful family of four among a sprawling field of wildflowers. It was a perfect (and early!) morning in southwest Montana. I enjoyed the sun’s rays, crisp fresh air, and the company of Mom and Dad with their two curious children. Initially, I explained some scientific stuff such as the names of the wildflowers and bird songs in the flower field and then we got into the more playful things such as candids of the family interacting and observing wildflowers up close.

The flower field was a perfect setting for capturing memories for this wonderful family. They wore warm colors to the shoot which complimented the bold yellow of the arrowleaf flowers. The mix created a dreamy, cohesive look that allowed their personalities — and the joy of the morning — to really shine.

What I liked most about this session was how relaxed it felt. There was no rush, no pressure for perfection — just a family enjoying each other, interacting, exploring, and making memories. Sometimes, the simplest settings bring out the most powerful emotion — love. And this family was filled with it!

Mom has such a carefree laugh and Dad has a gentle demeanor with the kids. We started with a few posed shots — the family standing together, everyone holding hands walking through the field, and of course, a sibling shot that somehow ended in the kids smelling the flowers. But the real magic happened in the candid in-between moments — the way Dad looked at big brother as he proudly showed a flower, or how little sister curled into Mom’s arms for comfort a amid the blooms.
