Fall in Gallatin Valley | A family session

A crisp fall morning in the Gallatin Valley was the perfect setting for this sweet family session. As a Bozeman and Belgrade family photographer, one of my favorite things about autumn sessions is how the mountains and changing leaves create such a naturally beautiful backdrop—and this session had all of that and more! The fall leaves changed color quickly this season, so I’m glad we were able to capture them before the transition fully into winter.

Mom, Dad, and their two little ones—big brother age four and his almost-two-year-old sidekick sister—met me just north of Bozeman for their fall family photos. This park is well known to locals as a great spot to obtain majestic views. The mountains stood tall behind us and the trees were showing off their golden fall colors. There’s something especially peaceful about a fall morning in Montana. The air is crisp, the light is soft, and the valley is just beginning to wake up; a perfect combination for a family session!

The kids arrived with lots of energy, ready to explore. At four years old, big sibling was full of personality and excitement for the adventure ahead. Meanwhile, his almost-two-year-old sibling was a bit more reserved but still curious—especially the crunchy leaves scattered along the path. Watching little ones explore the world around them is always one of my favorite parts of family sessions. Those genuine moments often become the most meaningful photos.

After a few photos with a giant yellow oak at the front of the park, we took a short walk through the area to find more pockets of soft morning light and vibrant fall color. Coupled with a stunning mountain backdrop, the golden leaves added warmth and texture to every scene making this a perfect morning session. Fall family photos in the Bozeman area truly feel magical this time of year.

As with many sessions involving young kids, we focused on keeping things playful and relaxed. There was plenty of running, leaf crunching, and snuggling between Mom and Dad. Big bother loved helping his little sibling find the “best leaves.” It was clear these two already share a sweet bond. Some of my favorite moments happened in between the posed photos—little giggles, quick hugs, and the proud look on Mom and Dad’s faces as they watched their kids hold hands.

Even with the excitement and exploring, both kids did an amazing job throughout the session. The almost-two-year-old especially loved snuggling with Mom in front of the gorgeous mountain back drop. Additionally, the four-year-old happily showed off his best silly faces in between smiles.

Family sessions like this are such a joy because they capture a season of life that moves incredibly fast. The toddler and preschool years are full of personality, curiosity, and constant motion—and those are the moments worth remembering.

I had such a wonderful time photographing this family during their fall session here in the Gallatin Valley. The beautiful mountains, vibrant autumn colors, and the love this family shares made it a truly special morning. Sessions like this are exactly why I love being a Bozeman and Belgrade family photographer. There is something special about getting to document these fleeting seasons and turn them into memories families can look back on for years to come. I am so grateful for opportunities like this!
